The United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNDOSA) called all member states to fully implement measures to ensure that Space Debris Mitigation Guidelines are fully implemented.

Ms. Mazlan Othman, the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, said that "the prompt implementation of appropriate space debris mitigation measures is in humanity's common interest, particularly if we are to preserve the outer space environment for future generations".

On 10th February at 16:55 GMT inactive Russian satellite called "Cosmos 2251" has collided with operational US satellite "Iridium 33" about 790 km above the Earth.

UN space debris mitigation guidelines calls for limiting the long-term presence of spacecrafts and launch vehicles in low-Earth orbit, up to some 1,600 kilometers above Earth's surface, after the end of their mission.
